Apprentice Week at MSite

Drumroll please… introducing Caoimhe Simpson, MSite’s new (ish) Desktop Support Apprentice. Caoimhe has been at MSite for four months and is a stellar addition to our IT department, we caught up with her to ask about her role and what she likes about working at MSite…

Q) What is working at MSite like?

It’s amazing! I feel like it’s such a great place to start my career, I’ve already learnt a lot and been able to apply a lot of the learning from my degree. From day one, I was given responsibility and was able to have input into key projects. I am constantly learning and being pushed into challenging situations; I am excited to grow and develop myself here. Everyone is super friendly too!

Q) What’s the coolest thing you’ve been working on?

I was involved with the installation of our new access points around the office, this was the first hands on project I worked on was which pretty cool. I was stress testing the internal networks, identifying areas of weakness and then sourcing a means for improvement, I even had to get up a ladder and help set up the installations! Now I’m responsible for regular testing to ensure the new systems stay up to scratch.

Q) What do you like most about working at MSite?

Without a shadow of doubt, it would have to be the people. My mentor and wider team really supported me through my first couple of months, I feel everyone at MSite are very focused on helping me develop and progress my career. Everyone has a lot of humility and there’s no egos getting banded about, which made me feel welcome and allowed me to really hit the ground running.

Q) Tell me about your responsibilities?

Essentially, I make sure everyone has the necessary tools they need to perform their jobs and I manage internal support tickets by troubleshooting and resolving issues from our office and field-based staff. In addition to this, I’m constantly monitoring and looking for ways to improve our IT systems and help with ensuring we’re Cyber Essentials Plus compliant. Finally, I’m involved with managing plenty of technology beyond the desktop, from active directory, mail and application servers, to networking, telephony, and mobile devices.

Q) What training does MSite provide as part of your apprenticeship?

My apprenticeship is combined with a Tech Master’s Degree in Cloud Development & Cloud Security, over the next two years. The programme is a 20% off the job training split, with both online and on the job training, as well as classroom training. It’s ideal as I can build on my existing IT skills whilst developing an understanding of other computing and IT areas. I like how MSite provide me with a lot of flexibility and support me in what direction I want to go in.

Q) Describe the culture at MSite?

The culture is pretty relaxed and informal. I feel everyone has a lot of flexibility in their role and is equally valued, regardless how junior or senior they are. There’s plenty of career development opportunities and people around you who will help get you there. Achievements are always recognised and there’s some great perks…and the office is really cool and funky too!

Q) Sum up working at MSite in three words.

Exciting, Innovative, Fulfilling.
